If you’ve ever taken your trash bin to the curb only to find it still full later on, you know how frustrating it can be when a trash pickup is missed. At Mountain Disposal, we understand how crucial same-day garbage pickup is for families, homeowners, and businesses throughout Southern Colorado. A missed collection can disrupt your entire week, especially when you’ve planned your schedule around it.
There are various common reasons why your trash may not have been picked up. Let’s explore the reasons your garbage may not have been picked up and what steps you can take to prevent it from happening in the future.
1. Tote Wasn’t Out on Time
We understand that mornings can be a bit rushed, and it’s easy to still be enjoying your coffee while trying to get the trash to the curb. Our routes begin bright and early, at 6:00 AM, so it’s possible that the truck has already passed your address by the time you put your bin out.
To ensure same-day garbage pickup, always place your tote at the curb by 6:00 AM on your scheduled pickup day. This is especially important if you’re at the beginning of a route.
2. Tote Placement Was Incorrect
It may sound surprising, but the placement of your tote matters more than many people realize. If your bin is too close to a vehicle, fence, mailbox, or another bin, our truck may not be able to safely grab and empty it.
Placement Guidelines:
- Face the tote with the lid opening toward the street
- Leave at least 3 feet of space between your tote and any obstacles
- Avoid parking in front of your tote on pickup day
A tote that is blocked by a vehicle or improperly placed can lead to a missed collection even if the truck is just outside.
3. Weather or Road Conditions Delayed Service
We’re proud to serve rural and mountain communities across Pueblo, Huerfano, and Custer counties and the San Luis Valley. However, Colorado’s weather can be unpredictable. Snow, ice, or heavy rain can make certain roads unsafe or completely inaccessible to our large collection vehicles.
What to Expect:
If weather prevents safe access, we’ll do our best to return later that day or the following day. Updates are typically posted on our website and social media channels. In extreme cases, service may be delayed until your next regular pickup day.
Additionally, rural routes with unpaved or narrow roads can be particularly affected by mud or ice. If you live on a private road or driveway, ensuring it is plowed or cleared after a storm can help avoid service delays.
4. It Was a Holiday Week
Trash pickup schedules stay the same on all holidays, except Christmas. Mountain Disposal will notify residential routes of changes and when the change will be as needed.
5. Your Account May Have a Billing Issue
If your service is temporarily paused, it may be related to a billing matter. In cases where there is an outstanding balance on your account, your service could be briefly suspended. However, rest assured that your tote will stay at the curb, and service will happily resume once payment is received.
We offer automatic billing options to help you avoid accidental service interruptions. If you’re ever unsure of your account status, our customer service team is always ready to assist.
6. Trash Weight or Contents Exceeded Guidelines
Each tote has a weight limit and is meant for household trash only. If your bin is too heavy or contains prohibited items, our drivers may leave it behind for safety or regulatory reasons.
Common Issues:
- Overloaded totes
- Yard debris, construction waste, or large furniture inside
- Hazardous materials or batteries
We recommend contacting our team for acceptable waste guidelines.
7. Unexpected Mechanical Delays
Despite our best efforts and maintenance routines, equipment malfunctions can occasionally delay service. These unexpected challenges can impact your pickup.
We’ll make every effort to return as soon as the issue is resolved and will post updates if widespread delays occur.
In some cases, mechanical delays affect only a portion of a route. If you notice neighbors’ trash was collected but yours wasn’t, it’s possible we experienced an equipment issue after servicing their area. Please don’t hesitate to contact us for clarification.
What to Do If Your Trash Wasn’t Picked Up
- Double-check your pickup day and time
- Review placement and content rules
- Contact our team by phone or online
We’ll work with you to determine the cause and, if possible, schedule a return visit or guide you on what to do next.
